Dental hygiene activity
Learning level/s: Foundation year
Focus area/s: Food and nutrition
Description: This activity required students to discuss the impact of food on their dental hygiene and predict the effects of sugar on their teeth. They conducted an experiment with boiled eggs, water and coke to find out about the effects of sugar on their teeth. The experiment required students to identify the changes to the eggs when left in the different liquids. They made papier-mâché models of their teeth using egg cartons to show the differences between healthy and unhealthy teeth and what can happen when they don’t brush their teeth after eating sugar.
Measures of success: Students are able to predict the changes to their teeth if they don’t brush them after eating sugar; students are able to observe and identify the differences in the eggs and how this relates to the impact of sugar on their teeth.
