Description: The Prep/1 class participated in the water safety program at the local swimming pool. This was led by trained swim safety instructors at the pool with assistance and supervision from the classroom teachers and school sports teacher. Children discussed the importance of water safety in the pool during the lessons and afterwards in the classroom. Students described techniques they might use in the water if they encountered any trouble and the reasons why these techniques are important: floating on your back and waving for help; wave with your arm in the air with a fist, then the rescuers won’t think you’re just waving hello; we stay together in rough water to make sure each other is safe.
Measures of success: Students know their water safety principles and why each are important. Children are able to evidence their knowledge of these in the water during the program and afterwards in the classroom during their group conversations.
