When developing HealthLit4Kids, we wanted to make sure that we learned from the experiences of other school-based health literacy programs in schools.
We searched databases of academic papers and found 21 studies that described school-based health literacy programs. Six of these papers were about health literacy programs in a primary school setting.
These studies illustrated the necessity of addressing health literacy at both the whole-of-school and curriculum levels. They also demonstrated the importance of professional development for teachers. Finally, they noted and supported the role of parents and the community in school-based health literacy programs.
The findings of this review have been incorporated into the design of HealthLit4Kids.
