Lunch box treats
Learning level/s: Foundation year
Focus area/s: Food and nutrition
Description: Cost effective and easy lunchbox alternatives that are good for us and kind to our environment. Students learnt that a balanced lifestyle is what makes us healthy. We spoke not only about ‘sometimes’ and ‘always’ foods but also about other factors that assist in making our bodies healthy, for example; shelter, exercise, mental health (friendships etc). The children have enjoyed coming up with healthy lunchbox treats and the ‘hands on’ approach to making and trialling them each week. We found that many students liked things they didn’t realise they liked.
Measures of success: Students have been proudly coming to school with some of the ‘treat’ ideas in their lunchboxes. It has been evident through this that they have been passing on the message to their families. On a couple of occasions we have had parents bring in bulk lots of these ‘treats’ for our class to share.
